Review of the new GIZ project ”Integrated Urban Development in Lüderitz and Aus“ in Namibia

bgh. Gauly & Volgmann supported the GIZ’s new project “Integrated urban development in Lüderitz and Aus/Namibia” as technical lead.

Namibia is currently preparing the large-scale production of “green” hydrogen (H2) based on renewable energies. The government is planning new H2 plants in various areas of the Namibian desert. The project area for the largest project of this kind covers an area of 4,000 km2 in the Tsau-Khaeb National Park, near the port city of Lüderitz. It is already foreseeable that the project will have far-reaching consequences for the communities of Lüderitz and Aus and their surrounding areas, such as a sharp increase in population.

As part of an on-site mission, a new German technical cooperation project with the working title “Integrated urban development in Lüderitz and Aus” in Namibia was examined together with the appraisal team. It aims to enable the government and administrative units of Lüderitz and Aus to manage the urban transformation process efficiently, sustainably and equitably. To this end, discussions were held with representatives of the various institutions at all political levels, Lüderitz and Aus were visited and a workshop was held with all key stakeholders, at which the findings and recommendations of the audit mission were presented and discussed. The review team then drew up a module proposal for the new project, including all associated facilities. The new project was launched in June 2024.
