Circular Economy in Urban Water Management Morocco

bgh. Gauly & Volgmann supported the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in a sustainable urban development project in Morocco. The focus was on preparing and providing technical support for a study tour to Germany for Moroccan professionals from the Ministry of Urban Planning and the cities of Marrakech and Tangier.

The diverse program included visits to key institutions: At the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB), participants gained insights into integrated urban development and urban development funding in Germany. The Berlin Senate Department presented concrete approaches to climate-resilient urban planning with its Urban Development Plan Climate 2.0.

In Leipzig, the emphasis was on practical implementation by municipalities: The City Planning Office presented its experiences with water-sensitive urban development concepts. At Leipzig’s Municipal Water Works, the innovative “Steering Network for Water-Sensitive Urban Development” was introduced. The University of Leipzig complemented the practical insights with current research projects in water management and climate adaptation.

Particularly valuable were the technical excursions to concrete implementation examples in Berlin and Leipzig, as well as direct exchanges with experts such as the engineering company Sieker and the Berlin Centre of Competence for Water.

The project was part of a GIZ initiative aimed at better integrating aspects of climate resilience and water circular economy into Moroccan urban planning. The study tour enabled participants to learn from German experiences, share their own experiences, and develop approaches for their own practice with their conversation partners.
