The city of Freising looks back on 1,300 years of history and, with the redevelopment of the train station area, is opening another forward-looking chapter in innovative urban development in the region. The goal is to create a piece of the city of the future that is well-connected both locally and regionally through the strengthening of public transit and bicycle infrastructure.
To support city officials and decision-makers, a “peer-to-peer” advisory format was established under the umbrella of IBA Metropolregion München GmbH (IBA-M). Experts from other German cities shared their experiences and consulted with city departments on the complex development of the future neighborhood. During workshops and a field trip, participants shared experiences from similar projects, discussed challenges together, and developed new approaches to solving them.

The first expert workshop was designed to define the uses, qualities, and general framework for the site. In addition, external stakeholders—including property owners, businesses, community groups, and policymakers—were given the opportunity to learn more and actively participate. The second expert workshop focused on examining innovative approaches, the process, and the tools necessary for successful implementation in order to achieve the ambitious goals of the spatial restructuring.
