Urban Energies – South African-German City Network [South Africa & Germany]

The South African-German Urban Network is an important initiative that was implemented within the project „Internationale Umsetzung des Memorandums Städtische Energien – Zukunftsaufgaben der Städte“ , International implementation of the memorandum Urban Energies – Urban Challenges. It is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB).

Central stakeholders in this network are local representatives from the field of urban development and urban renewal of the following cities:

  • Ekurhuleni, Msunduzi und Nelson Mandela Bay (in South Africa)
  • Halle/Saale, Ludwigsburg und Munich (in Germany)

Other participants at a state level are the Federal Ministry BMUB , the South African Department for Cooperative Governance (DCoG), the Deutsche Städtetag (DST), the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), the South African Cities Network (SACN) and the City Support Programme (CSP).

Mutual advise and the exchange of practical tips play a role as important as the experts exchange. In so called „living labs“, one project per city is analyzed with mutual learning and experimentation in its focus. Each one of this projects was accompanied by the learning network over the entire period of time with the organisation of multi-day workshops, virtual meetings and webinars, in order to ensure the continuity of the collaboration. Since 2016, Bürogemeinschaft Gauly & Volgmann is working on the following specific tasks:

  • Continuous support of German cities
  • Preparation and co-facilitation of the workshops in South Africa and Germany as well as preparation and support of the network at the 11th Federal Congress National Urban Development Policy in Hamburg
  • Knowledge management and knowledge dissemination
  • Overall strategic consultancy and development of this initiative
